The question that everybody has been thinking or asking that hasn’t seen Age of Extinction yet is “Is the new Transformers movie a success?” I was so happy to learn that Shia LaBeouf was out of the latest movie. Megan Fox’s character was so useless in Revenge of the Fallen, and LaBeouf’s character was equally as useless in Dark of the Moon. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed the first movie and those characters were great in it. I just think Age of Extinction did what the previous three movies couldn’t. The latest Transformers movie is an all around good movie. Unfortunately, you need to have really seen the first three movies to understand most of it. It’s a great refresh without rebooting. In fact, I would say the third would be a lot better if you could jump right into the fourth. So, to answer that opening question “Is the new Transformers movie a success”? Yes, very much.
I don’t want to give away too much about the movie, so I’ll make this as spoiler free as possible. Just be aware, if you go into the movie for this:
You will be very, very disappointed. This is pretty much about 5 minutes during the last 20 minutes of an over 2 and a half hour movie. That doesn’t mean Optimus riding a Dinobot isn’t awesome. It’s just the least reason you should watch this movie. This is one of the best reasons to watch the movie:
This is one of Wahlburg’s best roles. He doesn’t start out as a super badass guy who kicks a lot of butt. He starts out smart and struggling with his teenage daughter and crazy funny friend/employee (played by the hilarious T.J. Miller). So much character development. I cannot wait to buy this movie on Bluray… and I don’t even own the first three!
Another character that is played perfectly is Harold Attinger (portrayed by Kelsey Grammar) the creator of the CIA / military group Cemetery Wind. These guys are hunting down transformers, both Decepticons and Autobots, and are aided by Lockdown. Although Lockdown is serving a much higher power. The creators, of at least the transformers, get featured in the opening scene of the movie and I have a feeling will be essential to the plot of the next movie. A sort of creepy inventor genius guy, which really reminded me of the villain from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, manages to bring an old fan favorite to life on the big screen.
I won’t give a way too much, but Galvatron definitely makes it out of the movie alive. Hoping the series going forward will live up to this amazing refresh. The special effects are amazing and the characters are amazing. Some of the new toys are pretty fantastic. Not too much like the movie, but so much better than the classic ones. Don’t get me wrong, I loved transformers toys growing up. What 80’s kid didn’t? But this Galvatron is pretty cool.
