Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Season One Review

By | June 9, 2014

I remember the first thing I thought when I heard they were airing this show: ‘What the hell! Coulson is dead! How the hell is he on this show!?!’ Well, after a full season we know how and it is also a heavy reminder that we should not always take what we see as the absolute way things are. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was an excellent addition to the franchise. In this review, I will go over what I liked, didn’t like, and speculations of things to come.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What I liked

To start, I liked that the show was not entirely stand alone. There were several instances where there was direct tie in with the movies. At first it was just little things like the cleaning up in London after Malekith and the Dark Elves tore it up but then, the biggest and greatest spectacle of the season was the tie in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. My biggest complaint about the show until this point was who was to be the big antagonist for the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. because in the comics the predominately went up against HYDRA, well, the words “be careful what you wish for” came to mind and I was clapping with joy at that revelation. I did not see it coming and the way the left you felling at the end of the episode the week of Captain America’s release was exceptionally well done. But even more exciting is that they didn’t answer everything and left things unfinished to bring you back to watch season two.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill

Another thing I liked was the addition of using characters from the movies to help bring more life to the show such as Sif from Thor and Agent Hill from Avengers and Captain America. It helped to give you the impression that the world is truly vast and not just its own universe. It brought a whole new depth to the show to remind us that there are multiple levels at work. Of course I can’t forget to mention Nick Fury’s presence not just in the season finale but early on in the show. I knew he would have to make an appearance at some point because he is the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. but I didn’t expect it to be in the second episode.

With that mentioned I have to say I was greatly surprised when they decided to include Deathlock in the show. People just do not realize, or they easily forget, how large the Marvel universe is. There are so many possibilities that this show can take but I will mention them in a later section.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: What I didn’t like

It was a slow start. I mean it was a real slow start. It was so slow that there was a time where I was thinking about writing the show off as a waste of time but I am glad that I pushed through and let it play out. I get that a show needs to build up the characters and find their foundation before you tear it up but why didn’t they use other characters from the comics that we already knew about? Had they done that and thrown in some new characters to fill in the cast then I think it wouldn’t have moved a bit more smoothly.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. - Grant Ward

Second thing I didn’t like was the cliché of the handsome, field agent guy falling for the pretty, anti-establishment hacker girl. That was incredibly campy and over played. I see why they did it now but that is not the point. It is over played. The same thing goes for the two science techs, Fitz and Simons. I get that it adds “drama” to the show but it gets tiresome. Had they just started them off as already being married or in a relationship I think it would still have been funny and not overdone.
Finally, I did not like how they had to label S.H.I.E.L.D. as a terrorist group! Again, it adds drama, blah, blah, blah, but seriously why did they have to go that route? I wish I had a suggestion for an alternative but I am just flustered by this. It is just one of those things that I hope they will sort out come the next Avengers movie, or (fingers crossed) it touches on in Guardians of the Galaxy.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Things to come

Oh, the possibilities that they can take with this are endless. I mean, just look at the season finale. What was that cube that Fury gave Coulson? What was that diagram that Agent Garret started and Coulson added on to? And who was that guy that ‘Flowers’ told that Sky was his daughter? It is enough to drive you mad waiting for the next season. Thankfully this show is on ABC and not Fox (Fox really does not know how to work with shows, or even movies, with a grander vision than what can be gain immediately) they are willing to give the show’s creators the flexibility to take the show in the direction they want.
I personally am hoping that more established agents will make an appearance in the next season even though S.H.I.E.L.D. is no more I am confident that it will be re-forged into what we all know it to be and that these agents will help to bring it to its true glory. I do feel that Fury is going to come back just not entirely sure how, yet. There is also Hill to be considered. We saw her interview at Stark in Captain America and talk with Pepper on the show so I don’t believe her part in S.H.I.E.L.D. is over. Then there is Hawkeye and Black Widow. There is a lot of talk in the rumor mill that they along with Fury are getting their own movies but I have not heard of anything concrete about those but they still play a big role in S.H.I.E.L.D. and I for one would like to see more of that reflected in the show.

So much to hope for between now and next fall but for now just remember: So long as there is a threat to our safety we will need a S.H.I.E.L.D.
